Community Wide Yom HaShoah Observance Held

The haunting melodies of the cello played by Amy Garland Goldman set the backdrop for this year’s Yom HaShoah community wide observance held on April 30 at the Ruth Hyman JCC.  The ceremony brought together generations. Survivors were honored, and young people from public schools read aloud their moving essays and poems. The young authors had participated in the Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale Community College’s Annual Luna Kaufman Writing and Art Contest.  The winning entries were published in “Flowers from the Ashes, Volume IV, An Anthology of Student’s Writings on the Holocaust.”  To commemorate the loss of our fellow 6 million Jews, survivors lit yellow candles.  A seventh candle was added this year to honor the righteous gentiles who risked their own lives to save Jews. Local rabbis and cantors led the audience in prayer and song. And children in the audience stood up and read aloud names of children who perished in the Holocaust. To see more pictures click here.

Contacting  Federation in our area of professional or personal interest is a great first step. You can also check out our calendar of events.
Make a Contribution
The Jewish Federation is an amazing testament to the compassion of our Jewish community when you consider our relatively small size versus the general population. There are many ways to make a financial contribution to the Federation, and all of them help fulfill the Jewish mandate of tikkun olam, healing the world.
Volunteer
Somewhere in Monmouth County, maybe even in your own neighborhood, there are people who need your time, your skills and your friendship. Acts of loving kindness are at the root of Jewish tradition. Volunteer on your own, with your friends or your family - for a day or for a year.

Leadership Opportunities
The philanthropic world is changing and the Federation recognizes that you have numerous options regarding leadership opportunities within nonprofit organizations. It is imperative to our continued vitality as an organization to seek out the next generation of leaders for our community. If you are interested in becoming a leader within the Federation, read on for just a brief sampling of the various leadership development programs we offer.

The Jewish Federation Establishes Emergency Fund for Myanmar

In response to the devastating cyclone that hit Myanmar last week, The Jewish Federation of Monmouth County has established a special Myanmar Emergency Relief Fund. Although the extent of the needs is not yet clear, it has been reported that 22,000 are dead, 41,000 missing, and up to one million made homeless. The Federation will distribute the money collected in the emergency fund, and will work with agencies on the ground in the affected areas as the needs become clear. To donate to the Myanmar Emergency Relief Fund, call (732) 531-6200 or send a check to: The Jewish Federation of Monmouth County, 100 Grant Avenue, Deal, NJ 07723. Please make checks payable to The Jewish Federation of Monmouth County with the words “Myanmar Relief Fund” in the memo line. Donations can also  be made online.
